This article offers a comparative analysis of the capital cities of Argentina and Portugal, which, at the onset of the Great War, operated concession-based gas services for public lighting. The cases of Buenos Aires and Lisbon illustrate divergent pathways in public gas lighting, set against a backdrop of external dependence on coal and the burgeoning advancement of electric lighting. Despite these differences, we will highlight aspects that draw parallels and shed light on the abrupt cessation of public gas lighting precipitated by the First World War.Downloads
