Since its foundation on 25 May 1963, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) has maintained an unwavering position on the decolonisation of African territories. The aim of this study is to analyse the position of this institution with respect to three island regions: The Canary Islands, a territory dominated by Spain, the Cape Verde Islands, occupied by Portugal until 1974, and Madeira, currently a Portuguese region. In the case of the first and the third, the OAU, after a long process of negotiation, decided not to support self-determination, while in the case of Cape Verde the position remained unchanged. Therefore, in this study we will analyse the causes and motivations that led the African forum to take a divergent decision in territories that are certainly close to each other. To this end, a review of the bibliography will be carried out and primary sources will be used, such as official documents from international institutions (minutes and resolutions of the UN and the OAU).
