Abstract: This paper sets out the main perspectives and debates around art as they relate to the Italian Communist Party during the second post-war period (1944–1948). The paper has a twofold objective: to offer a historical explanation of the relationship between artists and communists in these years; and a theoretical explanation of the status of post-war Italian art based on the notions of abstraction, realism and commitment.
