Auxiliary Centurions and Their Functions. An Approach Through the Epigraphy of North Africa

This work aims to improve the state of our knowledge about the auxiliary centurions, who are much less studied than their legionary equivalents. The tool to achieve that goal are those inscriptions from North Africa that show these non-commissioned officers assuming extraordinary commands or simply outside their camp. This decision is based on the fact that the information offered by these testimonies about the true nature of the functions and authority of these auxiliary centurions is essential in order to understand the degree of similarity between them and the legionary centurions.
