Women's strategies of dissidence in African contexts: the case of public nudity in Côte d'Ivoire

Ivorian women were (and are) a fundamental part of the fight for independence, against neo-colonisation and for democracy in the streets, using strategies such as public nudity, traditional dances or obscene gestures that have the power to curse the enemy and protect the community. The use of these strategies connects with pre-colonial spiritual beliefs and the power of motherhood and builds community, in a changing context in which women's bodies are sexualised and progressively lose their sacredness.
