Naval expenditure and financial imbalance within the Spanish Navy: the case ofthe Escuadra de Operaciones (1793-1799)

The «Escuadra de Operaciones» was a Spanish naval formation deployed in the West Indies during the French Revolutionary Wars. In response to urgent demands, it developed into a flexible structure tasked with supporting colonial institutions across the Caribbean. This study examines the patterns governing the dispatch and receipt of funds for the maintenance of this exceptional organization. The fiscal strain generated by the high costs of this formation reflects both the peak and the subsequent exhaustion of the budgets allocated to sustain a naval policy commensurate with the protracted wartime context. This dynamic was not confined to this squadron, but extended to the Spanish Navy as a whole during the closing decades of the long eighteenth century.
