En este artículo se analiza la importancia de las dinámicas de poder local en la aplicación de las políticas coloniales en la Baja Casamance (Senegal), una región habitada por sociedades descentralizadas que dificultaron la instalación de las estructuras administrativas francesas. Mediante una investigación que combina fuentes escritas y fuentes orales, se demuestra cómo las comunidades locales modificaron la manera en que se crearon y desarrollaron las jefaturas de pueblo. En este caso, las políticas coloniales sobre el terreno fueron implementadas siguiendo patrones que obedecían a las dinámicas de poder local.
